People Don't Buy Services. They Buy Outcomes.
If you ask someone why they bought accountancy services, they'll probably tell you they needed an accountant.
But that's rarely what they were actually buying.
They were buying -
Peace of mind.
Confidence that everything was being handled correctly.
More time to focus on running their business.
The same applies to almost every service-led business.
People don't buy legal advice because they want legal advice. They buy certainty during an uncertain situation.
They don't buy HR support because they enjoy employment policies. They buy reassurance that they're making the right decisions.
They don't buy marketing because they want social media posts. They buy growth, visibility, confidence and opportunities.
The service is simply the vehicle that helps them get there.
So why does this matter?
Because many businesses spend too much time describing the service they provide and not enough time explaining what changes for the client.
Think about your own website. Does it mainly tell people what you do, or does it help them imagine what life looks like after working with you?
There's an important difference.
One describes a service. The other describes an outcome.
Clients are asking one question.
Not...
"What do you do?"
But...
"How will this help me?"
The businesses that answer that question well, often make the buying decision much easier.
They help people picture the result before they've even made an enquiry.
That might be:
more time
fewer headaches
increased confidence
better systems
stronger relationships
more sales
less stress
Those are the things people are really investing in.
This doesn't mean you ignore your expertise.
Your expertise is what delivers the outcome. But it shouldn't be the whole story. What helps them choose you is understanding what that knowledge means for them.
A simple exercise
Try describing your service without mentioning the service itself.
Instead, answer this question:
What is different for your client after they've worked with you?
That's often where your strongest marketing message begins.
Because people don't buy services.
They buy the outcome they believe those services will help them achieve.
